ByLight Teen Mentorship

Why I Started This Service

This service began with a simple moment that revealed a much deeper need. I was babysitting for a family, and while caring for their baby, their teenage son started opening up to me about school, friendships, and even dating. He asked for advice, and I encouraged him to focus on his academics and sport first. A few days later when visiting the family again, he told me that he had taken the advice seriously.

That conversation stayed with me. It made me realise how many teenagers are quietly carrying questions, pressures, and uncertainties — and how often they need someone neutral, relatable, and trustworthy to talk to. Someone who listens without judgement, guides without lecturing, and supports them as they navigate some of the most defining years of their lives.

That moment inspired the creation of ByLight Teen Mentorship: a safe, grounded space for young people to talk, learn, and make better life choices.

A Team of Mentors and Advisors

ByLight Teen Mentorship is not a one‑person service. We have a small, vetted team of mentors and advisors with diverse strengths and backgrounds. Teens can choose the mentor they feel most comfortable with, or we can bring in more than one advisor when a topic needs broader guidance.

Our team includes:

Medical doctors

Math and science majors

Entrepreneurs

Leaders in faith and spiritual development

Youth mentors with lived experience

Academic and career advisors

This allows us to support teens from multiple angles — emotional, academic, social, and future‑focused.

Career Development Support

We help teens who already have goals — and those who have no direction yet.

For teens with clear goals, we:

  • Break their goals into achievable steps

  • Help them build discipline and accountability

  • Connect them with mentors in their field of interest

  • Guide them on early exposure opportunities

For teens who are unsure of their future, we:

  • Explore their strengths, interests, and personality

  • Introduce them to different career paths

  • Show them programmes, courses, and opportunities available in their areas of interest

  • Help them understand what subjects, marks, or skills are needed

We also encourage teens to:

  • Create early LinkedIn profiles

  • Share their achievements, school activities, and projects

  • Leverage their parents’ LinkedIn networks for visibility

  • Build a digital footprint that opens doors long before matric

Career development is not just about choosing a job — it’s about building confidence, exposure, and direction.

Relationship Guidance

We guide teens through friendships, dating, and social dynamics in a way that is realistic and balanced.

Our approach:

  • We do not shame or dismiss their feelings

  • We help them understand healthy boundaries

  • We encourage them to prioritise their studies and personal growth

  • We teach them how to communicate respectfully

  • We help them make decisions that protect their future

We acknowledge their experiences without encouraging behaviour that distracts from their goals.
